Data center moving
Your devices are too vital to your organization's success to leave in the hands of inexperienced movers. MIGRA's data center moving teams pack, transport and re-install servers, storage and network devices so every device arrives as it left.
How we move a data center
Data center moving is more than transportation. These are the steps our teams follow on every move.
Before the move
Walk-throughs and preparation
We cross-check the inventory sheet against the physical location of every device, map the path for moving equipment, and order floor covering to protect the data center floor. Packing materials are delivered to the site in advance.
De-install
Inventoried and double-checked
Two-person teams remove devices, cables, power cords and rails as you release each block of devices, and check that every cable, cord and rail is accounted for.
Pack
Labeled with a Device Spec Sheet
Each device is packed and labeled with its server name, serial number, number of cables, cords and rails, and its destination rack and U location.
Transport
Secure, tracked, by priority
Devices are loaded by destination rack or priority group into state-of-the-art vehicles with GPS traceability, and tracked by inventory number throughout. For long distances we arrange secure, exclusive transport, including chartered air cargo.
Re-install
Racked, cabled, checked twice
Installation teams work assigned racks and aisles. A second team double-checks the cabling, then hands each device to your team for testing.
400 devices, 1,600 miles, one chartered DC-9
For a national entertainment and hospitality corporation, MIGRA moved EMC storage arrays, blades, IBM and Wintel servers, PDUs, KVMs and network devices by chartered cargo plane.
A test move of 40 devices a month earlier set the per-device timing. On move day, the whole move was completed within 30 hours, well under the estimated 48.

What clients say about our data center movers
“MIGRA not only performed the relocation quickly and securely, but they assisted our staff by installing, powering up, and connecting the servers to our network. They were critical to the success of that move.”
Data center moving questions
What is the difference between data center moving and data center relocation?
MIGRA uses data center moving for the physical work: de-installing, packing, transporting and re-installing equipment. Data center relocation is the whole project, which also includes planning, design and project management. More about relocation.
How are servers packed for a data center move?
Each device is packed in its own box with its rail kits, screws and cables, and labeled with a Device Spec Sheet listing the server name, serial number, cable count and destination rack and U location. Boxes are sorted and palletized by priority group.
Can you move a data center a long distance?
Yes. For a national entertainment and hospitality corporation, MIGRA moved 400 servers and devices 1,600 miles on a chartered DC-9 cargo plane, with secure, exclusive use of every truck and plane, and completed the move within 30 hours.
Do your movers re-install the equipment?
Yes. MIGRA teams re-rack and cable every device at the destination, and a second team double-checks the cabling before handing devices to your team for testing.
